Meanwhile, on 8 August 1969, another union was coming to a close and photographer Iain Macmillan was chosen to mark the moment.
In a delightful sidelight of co-operation, Macmillan had become known to the band through Yoko Ono, while Paul McCartney worked with him on the day to design the shoots on Abbey Road, done earlier than usual to avoid fans.
Macmillan worked with John and Yoko until 1971. As for the “Paul is dead” conspiracy theories that arose from his 1969 job, the photographer reworked the cover in his design for Paul’s 1983 album, “Paul is live”.
